I'll see if you're forced to play properly without the chests. That said, I opened all the chests in my first playthrough and could just nuke everything with unlimited magic. (Hence the description of it being a kind of survival game) I'm pretty sure the combat is the way it is because the devs want you to engage with the different types of items, rather than just let you destroy everything with a sword like, say, Hollow Knight. I'll save it for a rainy day when I don't have any other metroidvania-esque games to play I haven't beaten a million times. I can't imagine it was a deliberate design choice, but maybe it was and if it was, who's this for? I like the game, but the combat has a lot of pieces to it that make me ask "why?". Originally posted by Laguz:The only part that i find somewhat frustrating is the combination of enemies usually outranging you + quick recovery + hitpush. You just have to tell your hands to stop hitting the damn schoolgirl zombie and roll away or block the instant she is out of range, or you will get shank'd I really like this game but its still really hard to shake off that feeling thats something is off, even if it isnt really. The last part which is more of a problem rather that matter of taste, is that since there is almost no ivnurenability when hit, you can die really fast from traps or enemy attacks comboing you into oblivion, which doesnt add up pretty well with the fact that most things hit very hard. In the end, i know by logic how to beat normal enemies, but i keep dying due to muscle-memory. you expect something to happen since you are used to it, yet it answers in a way you dont expect, like eating a spoon of sugar but its salt instead, its not "bad" but that change in expectation is unconfortable for some reason. Its not a bad thing per se, but since its in-between two different combat mechanics, you end up in an uncanny valley feeling. Thats the strange thing here, since the enemy will be pushed just beyond your range, the fight doesnt return to a neutral state like your usual castlevania, but rather it expects you to roll away after attacking, which people usually do when fighting an enemy inmune to hitstun. Usually, games add some invincibility frames when hit or an increased push per hit, to avoid either you or the enemy to get combo'd into oblivion. If you hit an enemy, it will likely inmediatly start a new attack, so if you hit him with the border of your weapon (some of them only hit at the point, such as the icepick) you will push it out of your range, and it will quicly counterattack while you try to hit. The only part that i find somewhat frustrating is the combination of enemies usually outranging you + quick recovery + hitpush. Can't really be assed to play assassin or bother with the no chest run right now. the visuals really carry it and I like how much the different modes can change your playstyle. Still, I enjoyed it enough to play it thrice, regular girl, boss mode and witch mode. If anything it should be significantly harder, but the people who whine about it being too hard to play will never get to the point where they understand this. Where it falters is that enemy and boss design simply is not very good. Instead of pit platforming there are more deadly traps and environmental/elemental interactions that you either exploit or get ruined by. It's basically the philosophy of combat in old castlevania games (no canceling attack animations whatsoever you have to fully commit, though you have a much more free jump there's at least no shorthopping) but in a SotN-ish game with tons of different weapons, spells and stat boosting equipment to try. Take your meds, schizo.Īnyway yeah the core combat in this game is fine. Thanks though I guess I'll never learn first hand, that's a pass from me.
